Living on the moon has always been every child’s favorite dream. According to Jessy Kate Schingler, in her Ted Talk “Civilization on the Moon and what it means for life on earth” she discusses the ideas and plans the U.S. has with inhabiting the moon. Schingler says “The United States has an official road map seeking an increasing number of people working and living in space.” This could mean that we can find new key resources that we are lacking here on Earth, as well as create new astrological missions. Many wealthy people and private sectors have now begun to get involved with this project hopefully causing a huge breakthrough.

Life on the moon seems all great in our minds, but the moon is only roughly the size of Africa. Scientists also are beginning to notice that key resources may only be in small areas near the poles. But, how do we go about the moon? Schingler brings up a great point that “There are also legitimate questions about going to the Moon: colonialism, cultural heritage and reproducing the systemic inequalities of today’s capitalism. And more to the point: Don’t we have enough big challenges here on Earth? Internet governance, pandemics, terrorism and, perhaps most importantly, climate crisis and biodiversity loss.” We already have so many issues on Earth that need to be taken care of, we cannot bring that to the moon.

Schingler describes the moon as a “template” and talks about how this is more than just territories and borders, it is a whole new way of life. We can take this opportunity to really create something new could hugely positively impact our society for years to come. One thing that really made a huge impact was when Schingler brings up the point, “As we learned in our communities of self-governance, it’s easier to create something new than trying to dismantle the old. And where else but the Moon can we prototype new institutions at global scale in a self-contained environment with the exact design constraints needed for our biggest challenges here on Earth?” That sentence really shows us that we have all the tools to create something so amazing with the clean template of the moon. It is time for us to think beyond just territories and borders.
